About

The Department of Life Science at Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi, is a multidisciplinary academic unit that integrates the core disciplines of Botany, Chemistry, and Zoology. Established in 1973, the department provides a strong foundation in the biological sciences through an interdisciplinary approach. The department offers the B.Sc. (Programme) Life Science, designed to equip students with conceptual clarity, practical skills, and analytical thinking across molecular, cellular, organismal, and environmental levels of life. Through classroom teaching, laboratory training, and academic mentoring, the department fosters scientific temper, curiosity, and a spirit of inquiry among students.

Vision
The vision of the Department of Life Science is to nurture competent, ethical, and socially responsible graduates with a strong interdisciplinary understanding of life sciences. The department aims to:

Society – Adhibhuta
Adhibhuta is the official student society of the Department of Life Science and serves as a vibrant platform for academic enrichment and co-curricular engagement. The society actively promotes scientific awareness, creativity, and leadership among students. Through seminars, workshops, quizzes, oral presentations and outreach activities, Adhibhuta encourages students to explore contemporary issues in life sciences beyond the classroom. The society plays a pivotal role in nurturing teamwork, communication skills, and a culture of academic curiosity within the department.

Magazine – Quintessence
Quintessence is the annual magazine of the Department of Life Science and reflects the intellectual and creative spirit of its students and faculty. The magazine serves as a platform for showcasing scientific articles, research reviews, popular science write-ups, creative expressions, artwork, and departmental activities. By encouraging student participation in writing and editorial work, Quintessence aims to cultivate scientific communication skills and celebrate the diverse talents within the department. The magazine stands as a chronicle of the department’s academic life and a testament to its commitment to holistic education.

Message from the coordinator
Our primary objective is to provide students with a strong conceptual foundation, practical competence, and an interdisciplinary perspective essential for understanding the complexities of living systems. We are committed for quality teaching–learning practices through a balanced blend of theoretical instruction, laboratory-based training, and participative learning. We strive to foster scientific temper, critical thinking, and analytical skills among students, enabling them to pursue higher education, research, and diverse career pathways in the life sciences and allied fields.

Our departmental society, Adhibhuta, actively engages students in academic, co-curricular, and outreach activities that promote leadership, teamwork, and effective scientific communication. These activities complement classroom learning and encourage students to engage meaningfully with contemporary scientific and societal issues.

The annual departmental magazine, Quintessence, serves as an important platform for academic and creative expression. It reflects the intellectual vibrancy of our students by showcasing scientific articles, reviews, popular science content, and creative contributions, thereby nurturing a culture of writing, reflection, and knowledge dissemination.

The Department of Life Science functions in close alignment with the vision and mission of the institution and the University of Delhi, and remains committed to continuous improvement, inclusivity, and academic excellence.
